commitments and choices
Oct. 17th, 2007 01:14 pmEvery day, all day, we make choices. Some are unconscious, some are conscious. To me, my daily attitude is a choice. Also to me, being in and staying in love is a choice.
Long ago, I was told that every single day, we have to wake up and make the choice to be in love with the people that we promised ourselves to. If we don’t make that choice and live up to it and live through it every single day, our relationships will inevitably fail.
A couple of months ago, someone said something to me that made me stop and think about commitment. We don’t make commitments to other people, we make them to ourselves. It isn’t the promise to another person that dictates behavior, it’s the promise to self, it’s the commitment to self to make a specific choice in behavior and feeling.
To me, making those choices and those commitments are important and life altering. They aren't to be taken lightly. They aren't Velcro. They aren't a whim. They are a life style and a life path. Living in love isn't easy and it isn't always fun to stick with the choice and commitment I made to myself. If I’m going to make the choice, I’m going to do my damnedest to stick with it.
Every day, I know that I need to make the choice to love the people in my life and make that choice a commitment to myself to fulfill. Every day, I need to remember to make the choice and commitment to give and serve in every way needed – as an aspect of that love. It has nothing to do with D/s and everything to do with making the choice and commitment to live in love.
And there’s my moment of out-of-the-blue profundity. Take it and do with it what you will.
