Am writing, am writing. Am deleting, am deleting.
Actually, have complete rewritten a page and a half and am still feeling "eh" about it.
An outtake-
Little Arielle liked sitting on the porch, just outside the open door, watching the men fly on their brooms and looking out in the yard. She was petting Skeevers with one hand and Faust with the other. Faust was warmer than he had been last week. It was probably getting near the time that he would burn up. Mama had told her all about phoenixes, so she didn’t get scared when her bird burst into flames. It didn’t happen very often – she’d never seen it, but had heard that Fawkes had done it just a few years ago. She wanted to see Faust burst into flames and them come back as a baby a few minutes later – not because she wanted Faust to get hurt, but because she liked baby animals a lot. A little bit sad because Mama wasn’t letting her outside to play as much and Dobby, the new house elf had taken over feeding all of the animals, Ari looked at Beaky and Joe wistfully. Mama said that Ari was lucky to have a house elf to take over her chores, but the truth was, Ari liked feeding everybody in the morning and she liked looking for eggs in the barn. It was like a treasure hunt. She wondered if Sirius – the man, not her dog, was looking for eggs instead.
It was almost her bedtime and her Mama sat in her rocking chair inside, knitting. Ari didn’t like to knit, the needles never moved the way she wanted and usually, she just ended up poking herself. She was still puzzled that the man living in the barn had the same name as the dog that had left. Mama said the same thing every time she asked about it, “Yes, it is strange isn’t it? They won’t be staying long, Ari, only until Professor Grandpa and Daddy get some things figured out.” Ari had stopped asking, since it seemed to make her mother sad to say those words. Sometimes Mama seemed just as sad as she was right after Sirius – the dog, not the man living in the barn – had left. Ari didn’t like it when Mama was sad, so she was always sure to give extra hugs and lots of kisses. Mama loved those and a lot of time would roll Ari over and snort in her tummy. That always made her laugh again.
